International competition for improving lost sites around the world, looking for solutions to spatial issues concerning urbanization. I was part of a small design team of undergraduate landscape architecture students to convert four abandoned lots in Manhattan’s West Side into a public park. This project focuses on addressing the issues of underutilized land in urban areas as well as enhancing the landscape structure of contemporary urban parks.

To give purpose to this site while still keeping its history alive, a collective stretch of submerged pocket parks is proposed. Each park works with the dramatic elevation change by using a grid of elevated planter sections reinforced by retaining walls. To retain the service vehicle access to the site and train track, the service road is integrated into the design with dedicated pedestrian paths on either side. Visitors are given a unique experience to gather, converse, and play recreational games, while still allowing for the train track to maintain operational and maintained.

A submerged pocket park ideal for picnics, conversations, and onlooking from the streets. This area includes a secluded green space, street side outlooks, and terraced plant beds.

The main entrance to the collection of parks which hosts a grand staircase, recreational court, and access to the other pocket parks.

The only pocket park of the site that is completely at street-level, which carries the elevated planter theme onto the most easily accessible area.

This area features an updated service vehicle ramp and serves as the final stretch of submerged pocket parks of the sequence.
